ASHO and FIDISP develop an AI solution to detect patient risks

ASHO, a leading company in healthcare coding, is advancing, together with FIDISP, an AI-based solution to detect clinical alerts in real time: “Improving patient safety also means anticipating what could go wrong.”.

"The company, an expert in hospital digitalization, is committed to developing artificial intelligence solutions that support healthcare professionals and help enhance patient safety."

ASHO, a company specialized in clinical coding and technological solutions for the healthcare sector, is collaborating with the Foundation for Research, Teaching, and Innovation in Patient Safety (FIDISP) to jointly develop an artificial intelligence tool capable of detecting patient safety risks from clinical records.

Currently in its initial phase, the project focuses on the automated analysis of specific indicators or "triggers" that may signal potential clinical problems, with particular attention to pharmacological incompatibilities or medication errors that could compromise patient health. In this way, the system can detect if a patient has received incompatible medications or if the administration of a specific drug may be associated with a risk condition. One scenario already considered involves the use of heparina, a drug that could indicate a previous insulin overdose, which would constitute an adverse event related to patient safety.

"The goal is to develop a tool capable of automatically identifying any risk or contraindication that could endanger patient safety by analyzing clinical records," explains ASHO’s AI department. To achieve this, the project will combine natural language processing and machine learning techniques to read and understand the free-text sections of medical records, looking for warning signs that could go unnoticed during a human review.

Although the project is currently focused on detecting medication-related issues, the medium-term objective is to expand its scope to all types of relevant clinical indicators. This development is part of ASHO’s strategy to incorporate artificial intelligence into the improvement of healthcare processes, complementing its proprietary tools such as ASHOINDEX and ASHOCOODE, already implemented in numerous hospitals.

The partnership with FIDISP, a leading institution in patient safety research and education, provides a solid scientific foundation to guide the project’s development according to the real needs of healthcare professionals and clinical environments.

"These types of solutions will enable the healthcare system to be more proactive, identifying risk patterns before an incident occurs," ASHO emphasizes.

Through this collaboration, ASHO reinforces its commitment to the digital transformation of the healthcare sector and takes another step toward its mission of improving care quality through patient-centered technological solutions.
