ACCIÓ launches report of the excellent startup ecosystem in Catalonia
Catalonia’s startup ecosystem continues to grow and consolidate itself among the most dynamic on the continent. ACCIÓ launched this week a report on this excellent startup ecosystem in Catalonia, which reveals interesting data.
The region presently hosts more than 1,900 startups, a figure that represents a growth of 11.4% compared to 2020. A key aspect of the ecosystem’s success is its ability to attract funding. 2021 was the year with the highest volume of investment raised by Catalan startups with 1,479 million euros, 65% more than the year with the highest investment (2018).
It is not surprising, then, that Barcelona is the second most preferred hub in the European Union to create a startup. A fact that demonstrates the dynamism of the ecosystem is that nearly half of the companies have been created in the last five years.
Also, state-of-the-art technology is a mainstay. In fact, 47% of startups work with technologies linked to deeptech based on a scientific discovery or an engineering innovation. Of these, 36% use artificial intelligence and big data. The report states that the main sectors of work of the companies are concentrated in health (16%).
