Mediktor's AI integration at Parc Taulí sets a milestone in Spain's public health history
In 2023, Parc Taulí Hospital in Sabadell launched the Advanced Resolution Assistance Unit (ARA). In this unit, patients visiting the emergency room with low-complexity conditions are triaged by nursing staff with the support of Mediktor, an artificial intelligence software. The professionals involved have voiced their support for the project.
The collaboration between Parc Taulí Hospital and Mediktor introduces a hybrid care model that combines nursing labor with cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology. Patients with low-complexity conditions, such as urinary tract infections or ankle sprains, are redirected to the ARA Unit instead of waiting to be seen in the Emergency Department.
As a result, after the triage process with Mediktor's support, patients are immediately directed to the appropriate level of care, significantly reducing waiting times. Elisabeth Vives Vives, the lead researcher on the project, explains that besides being user-friendly and intuitive, Mediktor's software is integrated into the hospital's system, streamlining all processes: "It’s important to be able to integrate it because that way, the tests go directly to radiology, the analyses go directly to the laboratory, and no intermediate steps have to be taken to determine the patient's pathology."
Dr. Emili Gené Tous, Head of the Emergency Department, explains the benefit of the project for doctors. "The fact that these patients can be seen by nurses means that the doctor also has more time to dedicate to other types of pathologies with a greater impact." The public hospital, which sees an average of 130,000 emergency room visits per year, aims to optimize professionals' time, reduce patient waiting times, and empower nursing staff.
Such innovations are expected to continue growing and are seen as part of the promising future of healthcare. Ikram Skandari Kaddouri, a nurse working in the ARA unit, shares this view: "I think this system allows us to save time and to be more agile. Everything related to improving and benefiting the patient, ourselves, and society, I think, today, is a really important and positive step forward."
