VRPharma: Advancing Healthcare with Virtual Reality
The Hospital Universitario Cruces in Barakaldo has recently adopted BHH member VRPharma’s Virtual Reality solution to reduce fear and anxiety in children undergoing blood extractions, among other services. This innovative approach allows young patients to immerse themselves in relaxing virtual environments, significantly enhancing their comfort and overall experience during medical procedures.
Nurses at the hospital have reported substantial improvements in patient cooperation and reduced procedural anxiety. They noted that the VR technology alleviates fear of the patients and empowers medical staff by optimizing time and improving patient interactions.
Pediatric nurse Leticia Sainz mentioned, "Children relax and enter a virtual world, not even noticing the needle." More than 2,500 children annually will benefit from this technology. According to Verónica Ruiz Pereda, the Deputy Director of Nursing, "Nursing is always attentive to patient needs, and VR glasses have proven advantageous for both patients and professionals.”
VRPharma’s solution is also being used in the treatment of complex wounds in adults at the same hospital. This initiative aims to assess pain during wound care, monitor lesion evolution, evaluate patient experience, and analyze the economic impact of VR usage. The content is designed to reduce pain perception significantly, anxiety, and fear offers patients relief during vulnerable moments, while providing healthcare professionals with a tool that fosters more humane and efficient patient care.
The Hospital Universitario Cruces is the first in the Osakidetza network to implement VRPharma, joining other hospitals nationwide in leveraging the benefits of this advanced technology. Veronica Ruiz Pereda highlighted, "Technology is integral to modern nursing, empowering and enhancing our capabilities."
