Ricky, Sergio and Nixi at the presentation in Málaga of a new Virtual Reality for children in isolation chambers
In a presentation at the Materno Infantil Hospital in Malaga, Ricky Rubio and Sergio Scariolo, together with BHH member Nixi for Children, unveiled the new Virtual Reality experience "I am Ready", which now also guides children through the process of isolation chambers prior to a bone marrow transplant, complementing the existing experiences on radiotherapy and proton therapy.
Children who have been confirmed as having a marrow donor must remain in an isolation chamber for approximately 30 days. Although they are children with experience in the hospital environment and who have already undergone oncological treatments, they must now have truthful information adapted to their age about the process and protocol they must follow for this treatment to be successful and for their body not to reject the transplant. During this time, the child must follow a diet and specific protocols such as cutting nails and hair before entering the isolation chamber where he or she will spend this time with a parent.
Nixi, an integral part of the kit as his companion during the process, provides information about the side effects that these brave children may experience due to the immunosuppression necessary to prepare the body for the transplant. It also highlights the importance of personal hygiene prior to entering the isolation chambers.
"I am Ready" uses virtual reality to help patients and families learn about what will happen on the day of their treatment in an immersive way and is available to all hospitals that need it.
To date, "I am Ready" has already reached more than 1,500 families and has prepared children for radiotherapy, proton therapy and isolation chambers in 22 hospitals in Spain, Chile and USA.
