BHH member Fundación iSYS, a pioneering and recognized non-profit organization with the aim to find the best practices in digital health, has developed Xemio, an app to accompany patients diagnosed with breast cancer when they are out of the hospital environment, dealing with the effects of the disease and the treatment. The objective of this tool is to help the patient to lower their anxiety levels when they are at home during cancer treatment with tailored, rigorous, and up-to-date information. Xemio is born from the personal experience of Imma Grau, president of the Fundación iSYS, engineer and social researcher, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012. Aware of the importance of having rigorous information, just when it is needed to reduce anxiety levels, she decided to develop Xemio and thus help other people who were in the same situation as her. Now, Xemio has a multidisciplinary team in which Dr. Montserrat Muñoz, oncologist editor of Xemio, has supervised all the scientific content. What does Xemio offer? The app makes it easier for patients to carry out their own follow-up, offers information on dozens of side effects, allows their intensity to be determined (mild, moderate, or severe according to CTCA standards), provides hygienic-dietary advice and facilitates their registration. The information is complementary to the care and in no case replaces that provided by health professionals. Also, Xemio promotes the empowerment of the patient since it facilitates the relationship between doctor and patient sharing information about side effects via pdf or through interconnectivity with the assistance center (FHIR or ISO13606). In addition, it enables the sending of validated questionnaires (PROMs) and the development of studies and Artificial Intelligence. In fact, currently, it is a part of an ongoing European project 2020 named ASCAPE, whose objective is to take advantage of the recent ICT advances in Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to support cancer patients’ quality of life and health status. Exercise has been shown to be beneficial in improving the side effects of breast cancer treatments. For this reason, the app makes a record of the daily steps to promote physical activity. Patients will obtain information about the average steps of other users of the App, thus comparing themselves with people in the same situation and will be able to read advice on the matter from health professionals and the WHO. You can download the Xemio app for free on Google Play and on the App Store.
